What is Puka Up?
Since capturing Australia’s attention as one of the most successful football players in AFL history, Wayne Schwass has gone on to make a name for himself in more ways than one. Having battled silently with mental health for much of his playing career, Wayne is now a dedicated mental health advocate, committed to raising awareness about mental health, emotional well-being and suicide prevention.
Wayne recently launched a new social enterprise with a clear goal – “to stamp out suicide by creating the environments for every person to have authentic and genuine conversations about mental health and emotional wellbeing.”

PukaUp Suicide Prevention Bike Ride
On the 16th March 2018, 27 cyclists will embark on a gruelling 8-day, 1,433 kilometre bike ride from Sydney to Melbourne.
The purpose of the ride is to honour the 2,866 lives tragically lost to suicide in 2016.
The ride also aims to raise awareness about mental health and emotional wellbeing and in turn, starting a national conversation about suicide prevention. Ride information can be found here.
In partnership with the Black Dog Institute, PukaUp will deliver six community forums during the 8-day event. These forums will be held in Wollongong, Goulburn, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Shepparton and Ballarat Community Forums. The dates of these forums can be found here.
Audiences will hear from PukaUp CEO Wayne Schwass, who will share his journey with mental health conditions, how he managed to overcome these conditions and why he genuinely believes in the value of these conversations. Locally based Black Dog Institute volunteers will also deliver a tailored presentation for attendees that includes practical tips, advice, and tools that aim to allow people to begin to have these crucial conversations.
In partnership with Crocmedia, PukaUp will create a documentary about the event and the suicide prevention conversation.
